Campaign Update

June 24, 2013

We tried again today to send the covering letter and declaration form to the remaining twenty-six councillors who use official East Riding of Yorkshire (ERYC) e-mail accounts. Again we found our e-mail address was blocked, so instead we had to use a private e-mail account. It took some time to get the remaining e-mails through, but we wanted to give the council an opportunity to unblock us. Clearly they didn’t have any intention of doing so, which in itself is very telling and proves what we are up against.

We mentioned last Friday that ERYC’s Head of Legal and Democratic Services, Matthew Buckley, had asked all councillors not to respond to us. This is what he said to the Yorkshire Post:

“We have asked members not to reply to the email from ‘Justice 4 Bridlington’ at this moment, either positively or negatively, as it deals with a matter that may still require decisions from councillors in the future.

“The statement commits those signing it to a course of action and councillors signing up to such a statement may run the risk that they are unable to take part in discussions on these matters in the future as by signing the declaration they have predetermined their position.

“Whilst it is considered whether members would run such a risk, they have been asked not to respond to the email at this time.”

We do not agree with Mr Buckley’s analysis and will be issuing a statement in the next couple of days.

In the meantime, please help us by signing up to our newsletter. By doing so you will get all the latest news straight to your inbox. You can also follow us on Twitter and take a look at photographs of the campaign on our Flickr page. If you have any photographs you would like adding, please let us know. They could be of the protest in May, or areas blighted by failed council policies. A picture paints a thousand words – we can’t have enough of them.

Please do whatever you can to help. This is your campaign – it’s about Justice for Bridlington.
